Jay Evans
Jay Evans is currently principal trombonist of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra where he has appeared as soloist performing Jim Pugh's Concerto for Trombone. He joined the American Classic Trombone Quartet in December 2002. Originally from the Chicago area, he spent most of his early years in Sioux City, Iowa. Following a year as member of the National Orchestral Association in New York, Jay later began performing with the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, American Symphony, New York City Opera National Company and ‘Miss Saigon’ on Broadway. He also worked with notable conductors Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa and Jeffrey Tate while a Fellow in Trombone at the Tanglewood Music Center and was a participant at the Spoleto ‘Festival Due dei Monde’ in Charleston, SC and Spoleto, Italy.
While based in New York, Jay traveled extensively throughout North America, Japan and Australia with ‘The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber in Concert’, starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Soon afterward, he began a five year tenure with the internationally acclaimed, ‘Dallas Brass’, performing the middle voice on Alto and Tenor Trombones, and Bass Trumpet. Prior to moving to Birmingham, Jay resided in Evanston, Illinois where he held positions in the Grant Park Orchestra for three summer seasons, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago for half of the 2000-01 season. Jay teaches low brass and chamber music at Samford University, the University of Alabama-Birmingham and Birmingham Southern College. (Edwards)
