| 9 am | Lecture Presentation: The Secret Life of the Second Trombone Trevor Herbert The story of the trombone since the fifteenth century has been as complex as it has been fascinating. But how do we study and understand it? What themes and features run through this history and what questions remain to be answered? This presentation will explore some of the methods and sources that contribute to a history of trombone playing. It will touch on the dance bands of Italy in the sixteenth century, the trombone-playing son of a Victorian lunatic attendant and the attitudes of early twentieth-century Parisian trombonists to the idea of modernism. The history of trombone playing is about people and their relationships with one of the most remarkable inventions in the history of music. |
