Venezuelan trombonist and recording artist Mayerlin Carrero leads a diverse and varied career in music. A part of a very musical family, she grew up in the town of San Cristobal, starting her musical studies in the famed El Sistema. By 2007, she was a member of the trombone section of Simón Bolívan Symphony Orchestra, at the time led by world-renown conductor Gustavo Dudamel. She toured globally with the orchestra, including many performances at the BBC Proms and the Lucerne Festival, and she performed on recordings of Mahler and Tchaikovsky symphonies with the orchestra.
Since 2014, Mayerlin has been a resident of Miami, where she is an active freelance trombonist across all genres of music. She is a regular performer on the Univisión television network, notably in the house band for the program ¨Enamorandonos.¨ Her most recent project is as a member of the band Make Sound, which recently released its debut album.
Mayerlin is a trombonist we are so excited to feature at the ITF this year because she represents the brilliant playing, gorgeous sound, and stylistic versatility of the Venezuelan trombone school. This is a musician we all should know, and we can’t wait to hear her along with collaborator Johann Escalante for their program of salsa music on Saturday afternoon of the ITF, as well as at the first-ever Late-Night Salsa session Saturday night!
