The International Trombone Festival is proud to support outstanding student and community ensembles, representing university and local music programs from around the world. The following groups were chosen through a competitive application process to appear at the 2021 Festival in Columbus, Georgia (USA), where they will be featured on a main stage concert program. ITF 2021 Student and Community Ensemble Roster
University of Texas – Austin Trombone Choir
Dr. Nathanial Brickens, Director
The University of Texas Trombone Choir is directed by Nathaniel Brickens, since 2000, and was founded in the fall of 1977 by UT professor emeritus and trombone legend, Donald Knaub. The University of Texas Trombone Choir serves as a laboratory extension of the UT Trombone Studio. As a testament to the group’s artistry, the UT Trombone Choir was invited to perform at the 2012 International Trombone Festival in Paris, France. While in Europe, the ensemble performed on concert series at American Church in Paris, the French Protestant Church in Zurich (Switzerland), and at the Schwenningen Music Festival (Germany) to enthusiastic response, at times playing to audiences of over 30,000 people. In 2014, the ensemble performed in Denmark’s two largest cities – Aarhus and Copenhagen, and were named runner-up in the Remington International Trombone Choir Competition.
Natural Slides Trombone Ensemble

The Natural Slides Trombone Octet is a select group of students and is considered the premier ensemble of the UCA trombone studio.
Eastern Kentucky University Trombone Society

Since 2015, the Eastern Kentucky University Trombone Society has performed over 15 new works for trombone ensemble. In 2017, the Eastern Kentucky University Trombone Society performed a concert of all new works commissioned by the ensemble at the American Trombone Workshop. These were all new works for trombone octet written especially for the occasion. It was very well received and several of the works have entered the recent standard trombone ensemble repertoire. We would love to have the opportunity to present some of these works again for an audience at ITF, furthering our mission of sharing new works for trombone
Vanderbilt Trombone Ensemble

The Vanderbilt Trombone Ensemble was established in 2012 by Associate Professor of Trombone Jeremy Wilson, and is dedicated to fostering community and promoting new music for trombone ensemble. The group has performed at the American Trombone Workshop, the Vanderbilt Trombone Symposium, and the International Trombone Festival. VTE is also involved in the Nashville and Middle Tennessee community, performing often at local schools, at Vanderbilt gatherings and functions, and other community events.
Caracas Trombone Project
El Sistema: Fundacion Musical Simon Bolivar de Venezuela

The Caracas Trombone Project is a trombone ensemble consisting of 8 Venezuelan trombonists created by Branimir Leon and Jose Leon (The Leon Brothers Experiment) ,based in the National System of Orchestras of Venezuela. Caracas Trombone Project was born from the idea of merging the sound of trombone into different musical genres, such as Classical music, Jazz, Bossa, Venezuelan music, Latin music, and many others, in order to spread trombone music to every corner of the world.
UF Trombone Ensemble

The UF Trombone Ensemble has recently performed at the American Trombone Workshop, The Florida Music Educators Association Conference, the Florida International Brass Festival, as well as at the annual UF Trombone Day and other campus and community performances. The UF Jazz Trombone Ensemble was founded in 2019 to champion chamber music for trombones primarily in the jazz idiom; however, the group “crosses-over” various styles, frequently collaborates with rhythm section. The ensemble features University of Florida School of Music students working in collaboration with faculty to explore chamber works from a variety of genres. Members of the Jazz Trombone Ensemble were recently featured artists on the Jazz at the Hippodrome Concert Series held at the historic Hippodrome Theater in Gainesville, Florida.
UGA Hodgson Trombone Ensemble

The UGA Hodgson Trombone Ensemble is under the artistic direction of Dr. Joshua Bynum. The group is comprised of both graduate and undergraduate members of the UGA Trombone Studio, and performs several concerts each semester (both campus and outreach). The Hodgson Trombone Ensemble has been featured at the American Trombone Workshop, International Trombone Festival, and GMEA Music Educator’s Conference. Always seeking to broaden the scope of trombone choir repertoire, Dr. Bynum and the UGA Hodgson Trombone Ensemble have been a part of over a dozen commission consortiums in the past ten years.
Eastern Music Festival Trombone Octet

The Eastern Music Festival Trombone Octet consists of trombone students from around the world who have been accepted into the Eastern Music Festival Orchestral studies program which takes place in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Nathan Dishman, Director
The Iowa State University “CySlides” was formed in the spring of 2020. The inaugural live performance took place outdoors in September for family members only. This ensemble has served its members, guest composers, and director as an outlet for the difficulties endured and witnessed during the trying period of the COVID pandemic.
